LC-11 Cadet - X889E

LC-11 All-American Cadet – Registry X-889E, SN 503
Built by: Vearne C. Babcock – 10-May-1929
All-American Aircraft Company, Akron, Ohio

No Known Photograph

Completed on May 10, 1929, X-889E was built using salvaged parts from her sister ship X-551E, including the Le Blond 5D engine, serial number 371. An experimental license was approved on May 31, 1929. Records from the National Air and Space Museum combined the records of X-7997 and X-889E together so only a partial picture of the last of the LC-11 is presented here awaiting further research. [1][3]

On August 1, 1929, X-889E was sold to Samuel Taubman, the owner of Uncle Sam Stores located at 40 South Howard St, in Akron, Ohio for the price of $1,500. Over a year later, on November 14, 1930, she was overhauled with a new gas tank and wheels installed and her angle of incident was changed as well. This seems to have been in preparation for her licensing as a racing aircraft. [1][2]

An NR license (restricted for racing) license was approved on December 2, 1930, however there is no record of her being entered in any competitions. On February 25, 1931 she was sold to Chester J. Wertman of Cleveland, Ohio and she remained in service until the end of the year. On December 29, 1930, Mr. Wertman reported the little ship as “scrapped and sold for junk”. [1][2]

I am currently awaiting further records from the FAA archives and will update this article when the material arrives.
